Join us at the Stupp Center for the second lecture of the 2022 Lecture Series. Author Amanda E. Doyle will share “Sharing the Shade: A Brief Look at the Growing Welcome and Diversity of Tower Grove Park.”
When Tower Grove Park opened in 1872, its dedication and foundational premise were marked by high-minded words of a radical new vision of open, public spaces, available to all and for the benefit of even the least among us as St. Louisans. In practice, different groups have felt more or less welcome over the years, mirroring the trends in our city and country at large. How the park came to be a beacon of welcome for so many, and a sampling of the kinds of uses all sorts of people have found in the last 150 years, will be illustrated in this talk by author Amanda E. Doyle. Her forthcoming book marks the park's sesquicentennial year.
