Plant it Forward at Tower Grove Park

Is it too early to be excited for spring? While we appreciate and love the autumn colors, our team was busy preparing for warmer days.

Every spring, Tower Grove Park bursts with blooms at the entrances, by the lily ponds, and at the tennis center. It takes a team of staff and volunteers to plant bulbs in the fall that become beautiful flowers in the spring—including tulips, crocus, Spanish bluebells, hyacinths, and daffodils.

This year, we had help from a new campaign giving volunteers the opportunity to help with Park projects—Plant it Forward.

“We are grateful for all the work our volunteers contributed to Plant it Forward,” said Volunteer Coordinator Lauren Sawyer. “We look forward to enjoying the results in the spring, and we hope you’ll join us in the Park soon.”

This fall, we welcomed 118 volunteers, with 285 hours of help, to clear garden beds, plant bulbs and assist with other plant-related projects.

Earlier in September, a group of dedicated Park visitors, spent hours digging up elephant ears and canna rhizomes. In October, everyone returned (plus even more friendly faces) to plant almost 20,000 bulbs! We also had help from corporate volunteer days at PGAV and Bayer.

It was tremendously helpful and wonderful to meet new people, seeing everyone come together in the spirit of community and volunteerism. It takes dedication and commitment to spend free time digging in the dirt on a hot summer day. While not glamorous now, the hard work will certainly show off come spring.

We are thankful for everyone’s help keeping the Park beautiful. The next Plant it Forward will be in the spring—stay tuned!
